We have just returned from a Caribbean cruise on an enormous cruise liner. It was a week of eating on deck 12, casino gambling on deck 6 and online gambling on deck 7. Let me explain. The ship was beautiful, the food in all of the 10 different restaurants was excellent, bars were plentiful and the casino on deck 6 was a full scale version of a Las Vegas strip casino. We rushed there from dinner on the first evening and staggered out twenty minutes later gasping for fresh air. Everyone was smoking in there! We are both long time ex-smokers and cannot abide the foul air from smoking. But we love gambling. “I know,” I shouted with relief, “deck 7, the internet caf?,” as we headed down the stairs. Or is it a companionway? Three minutes later I was registering on one of the terminals and in a flash I was inside our favorite online casino laying down bets as the roulette wheel spun. “Oh, this is much better!” said my wife. It was true. We missed the noise, music and frantic activity of the casino but not the blue haze with its acrid smell that seems to pervade everything from our clothes to our brains. We played until I looked out of the porthole and saw the sky lightening in the east. By that time we had built up a nice pile of credits and we crawled off to bed happy and pleased that we had remembered the computer terminals and our ability to log into an online casino. The excitement of gambling never changes for us; it is always a thrill, much more so when we are winning. On a few mornings we forsook the online casino and went down to the real casino on deck 6 thinking that we would be in before the smokers arrived, but the place was permanently saturated with smoke and the arrival of a single slots player with a cigarette in his hand was enough to send us running for the computer terminals and our quiet online gambling. At the present rate of online gambling development, I wouldn’t be surprised if one of these days we will be able to log into an online casino and choose one’s gambling location, whether it be a casino on the Las Vegas strip or a cruise liner sailing placidly off the Bahamas.
