The inquiry desk inside the entrance of the bank is unmanned. Every other bank clerk and official in sight is on the phone. I pace up and down for a while and finally I put my laptop on the desk, open it and log into an online casino. Soon I am happily clicking away at the slot machines in the online casino, volume turned up high so that I make as much noise as possible. Perhaps I will hit a progressive jackpot which will allow me to buy the bank? I play on and eventually a security guard carrying a wicked looking machine pistol ambles over to see what I am doing. He stands and watches while I play and soon a couple of other people drift over to look. “Hey, Mister, why don’t you switch to craps or roulette and then we can all play!” shouts a guy from the back. I smile at him and change to roulette. “Place your bets!” calls the croupier and the crowd starts shouting out numbers. I click as fast as I can to place all the bets and the noisy yelling brings more and more people over to see what’s going on. When I look up, I see that the bank is empty and there are about a hundred onlookers crowded around the laptop all yelling out numbers. The wheel spins, the ball drops into number 19 and three people demand their winnings. I try and explain that I am playing in an online casino and using my credit account. If they leave me their phone numbers I will call them when I have their winnings. Play resumes and the same thing keeps happening. Soon I have a formidable collection of phone numbers and a couple of people remind me that I owe them thousands from the online casino. I did not even manage to complete my business at the bank that day. Question: do you think I have to call all these people about their winnings? Posted on: February 27, 2008
