The drive to the swimming club takes almost an hour in horrendous traffic. Once little Jimmy is in sight of the water I am left alone with nothing to do. I open my laptop, plug in the air-phone and am connected to the online casino. I look forward to a quiet afternoon of online gambling, while the kids swim laps in the huge pool on the other side of the lawn. I start with online slots and find a couple of new and interesting games since my last visit to the slots machines. But it isn’t very good as far as the gambling is concerned. I win one medium sized jackpot and then slowly feed all the coins back into the machine chasing after that elusive progressive jackpot. From the slots I move to the video poker machines. I always enjoy those. It’s not as mindless as the slots and I can make some of the decisions. The online casinos make many of them for me, and sometimes I even undo their ‘hold’ suggestions and decide my own holds. I play for about half an hour and lose everything I bet. The roulette is a big improvement. I scatter chips in the standard serpentine pattern and win many of the spins, and today is no exception. The online casinos must hate this kind of gambler because he wins consistently, even though the wins are not that big. In between, I bet on red or black as well. I make two trips across the grass to watch Jimmy swimming races. He wins one. He is doing about as well in the water as I am in the online casino. About ten minutes before the swimming session is due to end I decide to go for broke. The afternoon has gone anyway and I have nothing to lose. I pushed my whole pile of hard won chips onto little Jimmy’s birthday, number 17. I spin the wheel, hold my breath and close my eyes. What do you know?
