A week before the planned visit of the president, things began to change. Talk was about red carpets, flowers, dinner menus and whether the little dancing girls were ready. Day by day the pace of normal life slowed and the number of guys in the office tuned into the online casinos grew. I finally gave in on the third day, no longer being able to make normal communication with the rigs or even to go outside to get a sandwich from the shop across the road. The level of security was like nothing ever seen in this part of the world before. Every oil rig was ringed with grim faced security men carrying submachine guns. Helicopters buzzed overhead. Police cars raced up and down the streets with sirens blaring. The few brave pedestrians leaped out of the way on every corner. It was a perfect reason to stay inside and gamble online. Just like everyone in the office. The noise level in the office is horrendous. About 6 oil-men are knotted around Sid Jones’ computer where a full-blown game of craps is in progress. Jack Brown is the shooter and the others are all screaming to him. A secretary walks in and tries to blow on the dice. The men all yell at her, “don’t you know you never blow on another guy’s dice?” At John Smith’s desk a mixed group of secretaries and admin staff are playing roulette and I hear lots of moans and groans and an occasional yell of glee and when the little ivory ball starts clicking on its way to the slow-down. The door flies open and the director is standing there. I walk over to him. “What’s going on here?” he yells. “Online gambling, sir,” I explain. “This is crisis headquarters and so far we have no work. We are all praying that nothing will happen and that we can continue playing in the online casinos all the way through the president’s visit. Things went smoothly. There were no crises to attend to. Average staff online gambling win for the 2 day visit was just over $500. Come back anytime, Mr. President! Posted on: January 18, 2008
