I am a freelance security operative and despite the mayhem and murder going on in every country of the world, the only job I managed to find for the months of December and January was this miserable task of guarding an oil well out here in the desert. So I have pitched my tent, rigged up a stretcher to sleep on, set out my cans of spaghetti, sardines and bottled water and I’m ready to face the month. The saving grace is that I brought my laptop with me so I can continue working on my novel. I’m on page 389 and the plot is developing nicely. After a few days of experimenting, I found a way to sneak an extra cable from the oil pumping terminal report generator to my laptop so now I have access to the internet and the online casinos when my writing hits a block. But somehow, its pretty lonely out here and just about the only outside noise is the howling of the wild dogs at night. Last night was warm and there wasn’t much doing. It was also New Year’s Eve and I felt really depressed being so far from Sally and the boys. I logged into an online casino, transferred some money into an account and played roulette right through the night, betting one dollar chips on the red/black option. At times I was up twenty dollars up and then down twenty. Just before 5 this morning, as the sky was starting to get a bit lighter, I had sudden rush of blood to the head. I switched to twenty dollar chips and dropped them across the table on our family birthday numbers. Sally’s is the 19th and it came up twice in the first 2 spins of the wheel. Luckily I had let my winning bet ride so I picked up $700 on the first win and then $24,000 on the second. That’s more than my salary for the 2 months and I’m thinking of walking straight out of here after I’ve had something to eat and a mug of the disgusting stuff they sell as coffee here. Who will look after the oil well? Who cares! Posted on: January 5, 2008
